Old School, Dunan is a fantastic waterfront semi-detached holiday cottage, perfect for family and friends looking to get away from it all! There are lovely views over Loch na Cairidh towards the Isle of Scalpay as well as Raasay and the mainland of Scotland in the distance. The cottage is about 4 miles from Broadford where you will find restaurants, shops and other local amenities.

Old School, Dunan has two entrances, both of which have an area to leave wet jackets and muddy boots. The lounge is light and spacious with two sofa's to relax on and a window from which seat to soak up the sea views! There is a TV with access to internet TV, just bring your own log in details, and a few assorted games for more traditional nights in. The spacious kitchen / dining area has a fully fitted kitchen with electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and a cafetiere for coffee lovers! The dining area has a table with six chairs for family meals and has views over both the back garden and sea views to the front. The utility room has a W.C., washing machine and tumble dryer for guests to use. There is WiFi for guests to use.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms and either sea views or garden views. The master bedroom has a king size bed, small wardrobe with drawers, bedside cabinets and an ensuite with shower, W.C. and wash hand basin. The twin bedroom has a chest of drawers and an ensuite with shower, W.C. and wash hand basin. The third bedroom is another double bedroom with wardrobe, hairdryer and an ensuite with corner bath and shower over, W.C. and wash hand basin.

Outside there is a lawn to the front of the property with views over Loch na Cairidh whilst the back garden has a lawn and a decking area with garden furniture to enjoy the summer evenings. The back garden has a mixture of walls and fence to enclose it for dogs, and there is a whirlygig to the front for drying clothes.

Old School, Dunan welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs.

Stunning views and access to the sea from a comfortable cottage with good sized rooms that will suit a large group, helped by there being 4 bathrooms! Everything you need for an extended stay, kitchen functions very well and showers are amazing.

Great location on the shoreline with wonderful sunrise views over the sound. Good location to explore the southern regions of Skye and under one hour from Portree.

We enjoyed our week long stay here; the property is spacious and well laid out (the three ensuite bathrooms, one for each bedroom, being a major reason we booked, staying as a three-generation family) and the location is lovely too. The drive is slightly awkward and you enter/exit via a major A-road, but we had no issues getting in and out during our stay. As other reviews have mentioned, the house could do with a bit of updating. There’s a lot of ceiling staining from past leaks on the ground floor, and not much glassware for everyday use in the kitchen (outside of wine glasses); I would assume there was more previously but it’s been broken over time and not replaced. The neighbouring tree overhanging the parking area also needs cutting back. The main issue for our stay was there was no broadband internet connection available for the entire week we were there; this was quite frustrating as we ruled out other cottages on Skye that didn’t offer an internet connection when booking here. Although we were exploring the island every day, internet is quite important nowadays if I’m needed for work, or for the kids streaming TV etc (I should note the normal TV aerial connection was fine though). I flagged with the owner on our first full day who did respond promptly and attempt to resolve; my expectation was a line fault would have been logged with the broadband provider immediately, the owner instead opted to send out an electrician first which I don’t think was the correct course of action, but I appreciate either way it probably wouldn’t have been fixed before the end of our stay, so that’s just unlucky for us. What I was disappointed by was the complete lack of any offer of compensation; even just a small refund to cover the additional data we had to purchase from our mobile provider (fortunately, there is a bit of 4G signal in the cottage). This is customary if a significant part of the promised service can’t be provided; I stayed at a holiday cottage previously where the internet was off for only a day and received a partial refund without even asking or flagging the issue. To have no internet connection for an entire week and not even be offered a small sub-£100 refund is disappointing (I waited a week to write this review just in case a refund was going to be offered). Longer term, if this is a persistent issue I would suggest the owner invests in a broadband router with a SIM backup and antenna connection (a relatively inexpensive solution) so at least guests have some internet connectivity available when staying. Given all the above, although we had a lovely week in Skye and a comfortable stay, I wouldn’t stay here again.
