Winter magic in the Isle of Skye

Enjoy some winter magic in the Isle of Skye. We take a look at the positives to visiting at this time of year.

Warning. We could get a little poetic talking about our fabulous winter magic landscape! The snow clad Cuillin summits. The Fairy Glen glistening with frost. The mist creeping over the Old Man of Storr. The waves crashing against the cliffs at Moonen Bay! We did warn you!  Take advantage of all those wonderful photograph opportunities! Wrap up warm and make sure you bring waterproof jacket, gloves and hat. Enjoy that winter magic in the Isle of Skye!

So, when did you last experience a storm? Our winter weather can be wet and windy, with some ice in the early morning. Yes, there will be snow on the Cuillins for much of the winter, but most snow showers tend to be well above ground level.  Embrace it! Wrap up warm when you go out. Take care on the roads (especially early in the morning) and make sure you have some de-icer to clear your windscreen. Cosy up inside your self-catering cottage, and make like a local. Batten down the hatches. Listen and watch as the weather fronts blow in and the windows rattle! The sound of rain on the glass can be musical too!

The winter months  are indeed filled with magic here in Skye and Lochalsh! They are also a lot quieter. With less people around, you can take your time. Plan your days around daylight hours and don’t be surprised if not everywhere is open. The landscape is here all year round!

A winter visit means less traffic on the road. Yes, you do need a car to explore the island but some days you might find yourself the only car on that single track road. Just remember to take care in the mornings and watch the weather forecast for any snow/ice warnings.

Woohoo, the biting beasties go away for the winter! You’re welcome.

Winter in Skye and Lochalsh

The short days in winter offer more opportunity for star gazing. If its dry and clear, the winter night sky is a great opportunity to see the Milky Way and even the Northern Lights. Winter magic at its best.
